Old Town Craftsmanship
In the heart of Taichung—a city where modernity and tradition coexist—the “Old Town” remains like a well-loved book, its pages carrying the faint scent of dust and ink.
If you are willing to slow your pace and wander through the labyrinthine alleys to seek the most authentic old Taichung streetscapes, you will find Asakawa Coffee standing quietly at a corner.
There are no flashy neon signs here; only the silent vigil of Japanese colonial-era architectural style and the lingering, bittersweet aroma of roasting beans.
Stepping through the wooden doors of Asakawa Coffee, you are first greeted by the vibrant texture of terrazzo flooring. A staple of Taiwanese residences since the Japanese colonial period, its cool, polished surface has carried the footprints of decades. Looking up, the interior intentionally preserves weathered walls. The traces of crumbling concrete and peeling paint are not signs of neglect, but rather a profound respect for time held by the owner.
In architectural circles, this aesthetic is known as “the beauty of imperfection.” At Asakawa, it serves as a backdrop that allows one’s emotions to settle. Minimalist art and photography hang against the exposed structural skeleton of the building—a stark, beautiful contrast between the modern and the vintage—allowing every guest to instantly switch from the clamor of modern traffic to a slow-motion dream of the past.
The most enchanting aspect of Asakawa Coffee lies in its extensive use of aged wood. These materials might have once been the beams of an old manor or the frames of a forgotten window; rearranged, they have become the soul of this space. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the solid wood “distressed” bar counter. Its surface bears a gentle grain that offers a grounding sense of stability to the touch.
This counter is more than just a workspace; it is a bridge connecting the barista with the guests.
As a coffee house deeply rooted in Taichung, Asakawa maintains an almost obsessive commitment to quality. A roasting machine sits in a corner of the shop, where all beans undergo meticulous roasting by the owner. From selecting green beans to mastering the flame and cupping, every step reflects a deep reverence for flavor.
Sitting at the bar to order a signature hand-poured (pour-over) coffee is a feast for the senses. The focused posture of the barista, the elegant arc of the slender water stream, and the sudden explosion of aroma make the wait an enjoyment in itself. Asakawa’s pour-overs are clean and layered—whether it is the bright acidity of a light roast or the nutty lingering finish of a dark roast, each sip outlines a pure landscape on the palate.
To perfectly echo the heritage of the Japanese colonial-era house, the seating design is particularly thoughtful. Parts of the shop feature low-profile seating equipped with thick tatami cushions. This design does more than save space; it encourages guests to lower their center of gravity, adopting a posture closer to the earth to converse with the space in a relaxed state.
Asakawa Coffee is more than just a café; it is a good local neighbor in Taichung’s Old Town.
Amidst the waves of demolition and redevelopment, Asakawa chose to stay, restoring the old house with a gentle touch to ensure history continues.
Local residents occasionally drop by for a quick chat, while travelers come seeking lost memories of the city.
Asakawa’s existence proves that even in a fast-paced era, there are still those willing to guard the old times, using the duration of a hand-poured coffee to tell stories of Taichung, of old houses, and of life itself.
