Moon River

2025, Taichung

Located within the 1916 Creative Workshop at the National Taiwan Cultural Heritage Park—formerly the Taichung Winery—Moon River is a café that brings together hand-brewed coffee, homemade desserts, and the quiet beauty of ceramic craftsmanship.

Before we began designing the space, we spent a great deal of time observing the building itself. The original white tiled walls, structural columns, exposed pipes, and traces of age already carried a strong character of their own. Rather than covering up these layers of history, we felt the design should work with them, allowing new functions to settle naturally into the existing environment.

For this reason, the café was planned as an open space with minimal partitions. From the moment you enter, the coffee bar, seating areas, and display spaces are visually connected, allowing the original scale and openness of the former winery to remain present. The intention was to create a place where people can move freely, experience the architecture, and feel connected to the activities unfolding around them.

At the heart of the café is the bar counter, finished with tiles carefully selected to echo the existing white square tiles found throughout the historic building. We wanted the new intervention to feel as though it belonged here from the beginning—not by replicating the old materials exactly, but by creating a subtle dialogue between old and new. Softly curved corners help balance the industrial character of the space, making the bar feel welcoming and approachable.

The countertop and cabinetry are crafted from stained plywood, allowing the natural grain and texture of the material to remain visible. Rather than pursuing a highly polished finish, we chose materials that age gracefully and reveal their character over time. The warmth of the wood complements the cool tones of the tiles and concrete, creating a calm and balanced atmosphere throughout the café.

Part of the floor was raised to accommodate the plumbing required for the coffee bar. Instead of treating this as a purely functional solution, we integrated it into the spatial experience by turning the platform into a display area for ceramics and selected goods. The change in level adds depth to the space while creating opportunities for visitors to encounter handmade objects as they move through the café.

The lighting and furniture were also chosen with a subtle vintage industrial character in mind. Metal-framed chairs, classic pendant lights, and simple wooden furnishings complement the building’s history without drawing unnecessary attention to themselves. Together, they help create a space that feels relaxed, familiar, and timeless.

Moon River was never intended to be a café filled with decorative gestures. Instead, it is a place designed for people to slow down and spend time comfortably. You might sit at the bar and watch a cup of hand-brewed coffee being prepared, settle into a quiet corner with a book, or discover a ceramic piece that speaks to you. Each experience is simple, but together they shape the atmosphere we hoped to create.

For us, design is not about creating an entirely new world. It is about finding a thoughtful way for new stories to coexist with existing ones. Moon River preserves the history of the former Taichung Winery while embracing the everyday rituals of coffee, desserts, and handcrafted objects. We hope that everyone who visits can slow their pace for a while and enjoy the space in its most natural form—much like watching a river flow quietly under the moonlight.
